Resolution to Support Adoptee Citizenship Act of 2019

Rep. Robinson had the following Resolution passed in the Massachusetts House of Representatives in January 2020.


URGING THE CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES TO PASS THE ADOPTEE CITIZENSHIP ACT OF 2019

WHEREAS, SINCE 1948, THE UNITED STATES HAS WELCOMED OVER HALF A MILLION CHILDREN INTO THE COUNTRY THROUGH INTERNATIONAL ADOPTION BY AMERICAN PARENTS; AND

WHEREAS, THROUGH NO FAULT OF THEIR OWN, SOME INTERNATIONAL CHILD ADOPTEES LACK AMERICAN CITIZENSHIP AS ADULTS; AND

WHEREAS, TENS OF THOUSANDS OF LEGALLY ADOPTED INDIVIDUALS FIND THEMSELVES WITHOUT UNITED STATES CITIZENSHIP AND HAVE BEEN DEPORTED TO COUNTRIES WHERE THEY DO NOT SPEAK THE LANGUAGE OR HAVE KNOWN FAMILIES; AND

WHEREAS, UNITED STATES CITIZENSHIP IS A RIGHT OF CHILDREN ADOPTED BY PARENTS WHO ARE CITIZENS; AND

WHEREAS, THE 116TH CONGRESS INTRODUCED THE ADOPTEE CITIZENSHIP ACT OF 2019 (H.R.2731, S.1554) AS A COMPREHENSIVE MEASURE TO GRANT CITIZENSHIP TO ALL INTERNATIONAL ADOPTEES AND THE ADOPTEE CITIZENSHIP ACT OF 2019 HAS BIPARTISAN SUPPORT; THEREFORE BE IT

RESOLVED, THAT THE MEMBERS OF THE MASSACHUSETTS HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES URGE THE CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES TO PASS THE ADOPTEE CITIZENSHIP ACT OF 2019; AND BE IT FURTHER

RESOLVED, THAT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTIONS BE FORWARDED BY THE CLERK OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TO THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES AND TO THE PRESIDING OFFICER OF EACH BRANCH OF CONGRESS.
